Be at Odds with the Odds #IWSG
[I wrote this post as a member of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group where we share our worries and also offer support and encouragement to each other on the first Wednesday of every month. If you’re a writer like me and you’re looking for a bit of support, you can click the link and sign up here]
This month’s awesome hosts are: Nicki Elson, Juneta Key, Tamara Narayan, and Patricia Lynne!
And thank you to founder Alex J. Cavaugh 🙂

In the beginning, because there is always a beginning, in my little writer’s mind I wrote for me. I wrote to prove to myself I could form words and craft paragraphs and pages of word paintings. I wrote young fantasy dreams to feel important in my little fun worlds. I wrote for acceptance, adventure and to fly because what 7-year old wouldn’t want to be a bird and let the breeze carry you far above the ground where you could see it all and feel it all so differently?
This month’s IWSG question asks: What are your ultimate writing goals, and how have they changed over time (if at all)?
Elon Musk, a brilliant businessman has it right. I wish I had it as right as he does, but we are exactly where we are supposed to be. And today, yes, my goals have dramatically shifted. Instead of hiding my words, I want to share my worlds with young people. Instead of fearing what other’s may think, I aim to get my novels off the ground and out there and welcome helpful feedback. One thing is still true, I’ll shoot for the sky and hope for the best. I’ll work for exactly where I want to be, selling my books, teaching young kids how to dream and believe, and to do.
Goals shift. We shift. I’ll never give up though and neither should you 🙂

great and so true about goals. I guess because everything changes over time.. we change
Thank you Becky for stopping in today 🙂
Hi Erika,
I love that quote from Elon. We are the only judges they can determine what is important and what is not important. At the end, that is our life !
Thank you Ben. His words really resonated with me and it’s true, we do make our lives what they are 🙂
Very poetic. I think at first, we all write for ourselves. In time, we all want more.
That’s very true. I do. I am waiting on my editor and hopefully we can brainstorm soon and then hopefully my rewrites will perfect a submission 🙂
That is wonderful.
I still want to fly.
Me too Diane 🙂
You’re spot on about the shifting. We shouldn’t be afraid of our goals or ourselves shifting. It’s all part of learning how to fly 🙂
Agree with DR: very poetic. You have a knack for that. I can only imagine what your fiction is like. 🙂 Happy IWSG day!
Thank you Raimey 🙂
You shared with us in the IWSG anthology. Keep sharing.
Thank you Alex 🙂
Yup. Shift and change. Change is constant, and we need to be flexible enough adapt accordingly. =)
Thank you Crystal. It happens with and without our consent 😉
Inspiring! You keep on shooting for the sky, and I do hope the best comes to you.
I really appreciate your sweet thoughts Loni 🙂
Nicely said, Erika. 🙂
Anna from elements of emaginette
So true! Way to go with your goals!
Thank you Tyrean 🙂
Yes, goals shift and so do we.
Definitely keep sharing your work.
Great post
Thank you Toi 🙂
I used to think changing my goals meant I was quitting, giving up. I’ve since learned that sometimes you need to shift things around, shake things up, to make room for different, better goals. 🙂
Best wishes for your new goals. There is nothing wrong with shifting goals.
Thank you Lynda 🙂
It’s so scary putting your words out there for the first time, but once you’ve made that leap, it gets easier. Promise. And change is the name of the game. Goals should change as we gain perspective. Otherwise we’d all utterly fail, eh?
I absolutely agree about shifting goals. I love your quote about shooting for the sky and hoping for the best. So much about the industry is luck over talent. In the end, we only have so much control over how far our words travel
Goals should change as we do. Good luck!
Thank you Ronel 🙂
Reading and writing for myself is what made me want to write for a living. Great thoughts on goals and they do shift. Happy IWSG!
Happy IWSG Juneta 🙂
Yes, its true about goals. We all change and the goals change and adapt to us accordingly.
That’s a lovely point 🙂
Yes, its so true about goals. It changes and we have to adapt to the times and changing landscapes.
Thank you so much for stopping in. I like the changing landscapes 😉
You can’t do better than “shooting for the sky and hoping for the best!” Keep following your dreams, so you don’t look back wondering what if…
We are exactly where we are supposed to be? It makes me feel a little better about this crazy, disjointed, rollercoaster ride! 🙂
Yes, giving up would be too depressing. Even if the traditional publishing doesn’t happen, I would still want to create stories.
Nothing wrong with goals shifting and changing. Sometimes it’s for the best.
Shooting for the sky and hoping for the best is what we should always do. 🙂
What a wonderful goal: “teaching young kids how to dream and believe”. I don’t write for kids, but if I thought to put my writing goals in those terms, it would be to let people forget their troubles while they read my books. To entertain. Nothing more.
I love this quote, and it’s just what I needed to hear. I can’t imagine not being a writer. It’s not always an easy path, and there have been many roadblock and detours. But, oh, my, the magic we make, and the stories we share. That makes it all worth it. Thanks for the reminder, Erika!
I appreciate your sweet reflection Denise 🙂
i completely agree with your philosophy and try to teach kids to dream and believe and do too! and teach them to roll with whatever life throws at us
That’s so important Tara. Our young people need all the positive support and plenty of champions to help them through their choices 🙂
Yes, true about the changing goals. As we change so do our goals.
Thank you Kelly. I appreciate you stopping in 🙂
