I’d really like to be like Gandalf.

If my grey hair could be as wise and ‘wizardful’ as Gandalf’s, I’d be …

… what would you be?

On the first of January, I looked into the mirror in my bathroom and I noticed a newer brighter patch of grey hair. I have small dark eyes and they most definitely opened wider, staring into that mirror as I preened through my patch of sad patchy greys.

I won’t lie. Grey hair is not my favorite thing about getting older.

Strange as my mind might be, I immediately thought of one my favorite book series and all time favorite characters. The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. Then I pictured Gandalf’s amazing sparkly eyes and the smooth roll of his pointed words.

Maybe grey is a path of wisdom. Gandalf certainly made a lofty step into his power as he embraced the grey and metamorphosed into Gandalf the White.

This post was a wildly strange tangent off the following IWSG question for January, “What steps have you taken to put a schedule in place for your writing and publishing?”

Last year I set some lofty writing goals. I met some of them. I imagine the energy I put forth in accomplishing them gave me several of the strands of grey hair I now see.

This year, I plan to take the goals from the past, learn from the grey and finesse into the white. Why not? What else do I have to lose?

So what else did I do to hone my writing and publishing?

·      I bought Scrivener. OH WOW. It turned my writing world around. My mother always tells me I may have a creative organization disability. Is she right? Maybe. But now I can see everything in Scrivener. I can plot my scenes, switch back and forth with a single click. I don’t lose my place. My scenes flow and tie together so much clearer. YAY!

·      I’ve got a goal to complete my first draft in a YA Sci-Fi by March 1. I’m really nervous. I’ve never written Sci-Fi before. 42,000 word done!

·      Next, I have an editor waiting for it. Thank you Becky. Bless you for saving me and being as excited to read this new idea as much as I am.

·      Lastly, while I’m waiting for changes, I’ll format my last draft of Secret of the Stones into Scrivener, a contemporary YA fantasy. I’ll edit it, and maybe see something different in the time it’s set and in the writing growth I’ve achieved in the months it’s been carefully tucked away.

That’s it. 2018 will be a greater year. I’m more grey then I’ve ever been. Hopefully, I’ll be turning white by the end of the year 🙂

Speaking of Gandalf, I watched the Fellowship of the Ring on January 1, to lay the foundation for change.

Would you like a few fantastic quotes? Here’s my list from Goodreads.

  1. “No, my heart will not yet despair. Gandalf fell and has returned and is with us. We may stand, if only on one leg, or at least be left still upon our knees.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring
  2. “He that breaks a thing to find out what it is has left the path of wisdom.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring
  3. “Courage will now be your best defence against the storm that is at hand-—that and such hope as I bring.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Return of the King
  4. “He raised his staff. There was a roll of thunder. The sunlight was blotted out from the eastern windows; the whole hall became suddenly dark as night. The fire faded to sullen embers. Only Gandalf could be seen, standing white and tall before the blackened hearth.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Two Towers
  5. “However it may prove, one must tread the path that need chooses!”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

  1. Good luck with your writing goals! You know, I saw on Pinterest that grey/white-from-a-bottle hairdos are quite the rage… you don’t have to wait for it to happen naturally 😉

  2. I have Scrivener too and absolutely love it. And I have a lot of gray hairs too – don’t love those as much 🙂

    Happy New Year!

  3. I’m blonde enough I really didn’t notice the first few grays. Although I do think of dyeing it blue from time to time.

  4. The quotes from LOTR really resonated with me. A good friend finally broke down and read the trilogy from front to badk. I’ve been enjoying watching the reactions and the enjoyment. It’s nearly as good as reading it myself for the first time;

I must get back to Scrivener. Unfortunately, a glitch in it ‘ate’ a manuscript several years ago. I was able to reconstruct the manuscript and am no longer lazy about backing things up.

  5. Jennifer Hawes

I’ve heard so many good things about Scrivener. Good luck to you this year in meeting all of your writing goals!

  6. I’ve heard so much about Scrivener, I’ll check it one of these days. Good luck with your Sci-Fi novel. Don’t fret over the greys, they are wisdom highlights 😉

  7. I’m certainly hoping grey is a good thing.
    Science fiction – awesome!

  8. From someone who knows, yes, grey precedes white. I die mine. Which of course means my hair color doesn’t match my skin tone anymore. Sigh. What’s a girl to do.

  9. I’ll never forget what my hair dresser said when he first spotted some grey hairs: “Yes, you have them, but it’s nothing to write home about.” We all get them, and I actually really admire women who wear their hair natural without dye. I tried it myself for a couple of years. Maybe if my hair was all grey, but the problem is the rest of it is this mousy color that does nothing for me.

  10. I’d probably have a lot more gray hair if I didn’t constantly dye mine (it’s currently magenta fading into blue). I think if I ever did go gray, it’d be on purpose.

I hope you are successful in your goals!

  11. Must be a great feeling knowing you already have an editor.

I’m still in denial about the grey hair though.

  12. Best thing I ever did was get Scrivener and use Dropbox as a backup. Writing life became that much easier. Good luck with the plans for the year. No doubt you’ll conquer them. 😉

  13. Love the Gandalf quotes! May 2018 bring you clarity, peace, and lots of writing time.

  14. I’ve used Scrivener for years and love it. There’s also a program called Aeon Timeline, that dovetails with it and is of great use if you write series. I own the program, but have yet to pursue melding the two together. (To-do list item.)

There is also a Scrivener App, in case you want to take your writing everywhere with you.

But I haven’t found it as useful as the new program I’m liking better for writing on the cloud. It’s called NovelizeIt, which is simple and streamlined, but nowhere near as powerful as Scriv.

Best wishes on finishing your WIP on time.

    • I didn’t know about the app! I will have to check it out. You sound like you have a really great routine for success. Thank you for visiting me today Catherine and may 2018 treat you kindly 🙂

  15. You’ve made me want to see Gandalf again! I may have to celebrate gray hair more after I see the wizard. Here’s to a productive and beautiful 2018.

  16. Hi, Erika,
Here’s to you meeting all your goals!

  17. You’re so right. 2018 is going to be a great year! Embrace the grey. Someone already pointed out that grey is the new “hot” hair color. Your quote from Gandalf (who was still grey and not white when he said it) was apt for this post. LOTR is also one of my favorite fantasy stories, so I deeply appreciated your references to it. Thanks for the post, and happy writing. Also, happy 2018 to you! May it bring you joy and wonder. 🙂

    • What a sweet reflection Kathy. Thank you so much for stoppping in today. Lord of the Rings is an amazing series and I am still in awe of the language Tolkien came up with. Happy 2018 🙂

  18. Gandalf is amazing. . .and I haven’t thought of him in such a long time! Love the quotes. As to gray hair—it’s definitely a sign of wisdom. (I keep telling myself that too). Congrats on hitting all those goals last year and good luck in catching them this year too!

  19. Love the quote about time. And I’m interested to hear about your journey with Scrivener. I took a workshop about it and then …. kept using Word. 🙂
Wishing you a Happy New Year!

    • Oh Yvonne, Scrivener has been the best gift so have given myself this year 🙂 I will hopefully write s post about it later this month. Happy New Year, my friend 🙂

  20. tyreanmartinson

Awesome quotes from LOTR! And congratulations on all the hard work you’ve done!
    Way to go!
Happy writing and living in 2018!

  21. Ah, gray hair… I got my first white patch when I was 23. It was stress induced. =) Actually, I debated starting into dying this Christmas, but the whole maintenance aspect had me hesitating. Maybe next year.

Yay for progress! I’m so glad Scrivener worked for you. I tried it out several years ago and it was too organized. I need a little chaos for my muse to function.

  22. The thing I hate most about my gray hairs is how defiant they are. Most often, I don’t have to hunt them down, they have a tendency to stick straight up.

I got Scrivener and never got the hang of it. Too many bells and whistles, I guess. I switched to Novlr and it’s much simpler and gives me at-a-girls when I hit my daily word count goal.

Good luck hitting all your goals in 2018!

  23. Totally with you on gray/white hair. That’s why no matter how tight the budget is, I always find the money for hair dye. I’m so vain! LOL
