Moments Of Doubt—The Human Thing We Do

What if they don’t like it…

What if I’m the only one…

…But I’m so tired and what if I can’t see the end…

Fleeting thoughts.

Difficult questions.

All of them real, heavy and extremely dangerous. I found myself going down that very track just yesterday and it’s 100% true to say doubt can knock you off your cloud, sputtering you featherless all the way to the ground. Hitting bottom hurts. You’re dusty, banged up, and sometimes a little scared to try again.

Some people never pick themselves up—others never think about staying down as an option.

I’ve learned along the way to expect a few hard knocks because I’m one of those type A worriers. I make my lists, writing down all the difficult questions and obstacles. But when the words come from someone else—well—it’s really hard to plan for that.

So what do you do when you face your biggest challenge?

The best way I know how to deal with these moments is to take time and turn your thoughts around. Redirect your energy somehow—go for a run—listen to a song. Sing. Paint. Do whatever it is you need to do to bring back some happy thought. You deserve to dream.

The next thing I do is ask myself one really hard question: am I ready to give up and accept the alternative? Because either way defeat gets me or my actions will.

And I’m not ready to give up.

Sometimes all it takes is a new strategy to reach your deepest dream. Sometimes we have to reinvent our plan–a little tweak to the left. A little higher maybe. Maybe now, you have better glasses and can see a little further down that cloudy road. In any case, I firmly believe if you’re willing to work for it, eventually the door has to open. Then all that’s left is a decision to commit.

  1. It's definitely not a problem of being motivated… it's about the follow-through! Sometimes that's the hardest part, for me, anyhow. Setting my sights on the "dream come true" and focusing on all the benefits of making it a reality helps me continue forward. I'm less likely to give up or let my dream fall by the wayside when I focus on the positives and remind myself "You were put on this earth for a purpose… you were given these dreams for a reason… you deserve to be happy… you are loved… you can make a difference in this world!" That's what keeps me going!
