Music–Inspiration for the Soul

Minding my own business on a trip back from last minute Christmas shopping, I flipped the radio stations in my car as I drove down the highway. I raced past a couple of tunes and almost missed it—an old song from my childhood—one of the best songs. I smiled, sang along, drumming my thumbs on the steering wheel. Memories. Thoughts from when I was little. The intro to the song always reached right into my heart and squeezed a little, giving me the giddy shakes and wide stretched grins. Dreams. Van Halen. I know I’m really dating myself now, but I think I was about eight -years-old when it debuted as a popular rock song. I’d blast it. Then I’d draw frantic and furious lines of pencil–always famous people I’d dream of meeting—right out of my mom’s encyclopedia collection.

Music has the power to do that. It can draw you right out of the worst mood—maybe even put you back in one. So if you feel desperate, uncreative and stuck in a slump go ahead and try. Listen to the rhythm , or the words, or maybe the visual of the faces. Let yourself travel somewhere else; let the music tickle your soul. You might surprise yourself how creative you just might feel.

  1. I LOVE music and songs that take me to good times and places!!! It's neat how songs can do that… and smells. I'm a firm believer in music therapy and aromatherapy!
